John Adams is the main character of 1776. He is also known as the First Vice President of the United States and as the Second President of the United States. Married to Abigail, they have six children, Nabby, John Quincy, Susanna, Charles, Thomas, and Elizabeth, Elizabeth being a stillborn.


  • In the musical, Adams is known to be "obnoxious and disliked" while his actual quote was that he was "obnoxious, suspected, and unpopular. This was said when Adams was trying to convince Jefferson to write the Declaration.

In the MusicalEdit

The Musical opens with John, a delegate from Massachusetts, stating how useless the Congress is against going against King George's Acts. The Congress retaliates by singing Sit Down John! John then storms out of Independence Hall and starts to sing about the Congress not being able to do anything and not doing anything at all in Piddle, Twiddle and Resolve. Then, John's wife, Abigail, speaks to him in his imagaination telling him to back to her; she is currently on their farm in Massachusetts with their sick children. John asked Abigail if she had made saltpeter for gun power, but Abigail says that she didn't, still waiting for pins.
